The Tide Swamp Wildlife Management Area is another hidden gem to consider visiting while in Panama City. The Tide Swamp TMA offers several opportunities for hiking with splendid views, hunting, fishing, and enjoying Florida outdoors. This location is also popular among kayakers and bikers.

One of the best things about this location is the fact that you likely won’t run into too many other people because of the vast amount of trails. There are several small pools and streams, as well as a giant marsh you can explore. There are even campsites for those who want to stay in the park overnight or longer.

Port St. Joe

Port St. Joe is a hidden gem in the Florida Panhandle that offers something for everyone. As part of Florida’s Forgotten Coast, this location is rarely crowded and is one most known by locals. There are several activities you can indulge in while at Port St. Joe, including charter fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, scalloping, biking, and hiking the Port St. Joe trail.

Another aspect of Port St. Joe that attracts people is the T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. The park offers a great experience in terms of swimming, wildlife viewing, and relaxation. The water is gorgeous, so be sure to come prepared with your swimming gear.

Alys Beach

Alys Beach is off the Florida Gulf Coast and is known for its seaside community and luxurious look and feel. When driving down Highway 30A, look for a pair of butterflies. These butterflies indicate that you’ve reached the town. You’ll also enjoy seeing several Medjool date palms along the Alys Beach road as well as colonial homes that have the feel of other destinations like Antigua and Guatemala. 

The beach is gorgeous and is the perfect place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a good book. Or, you could go snorkeling or swim in the blue water. If you plan to stay in Alys Beach, consider renting bikes to ride around town to find secret gardens and courtyards that are scattered throughout this community.

Navarre Beach

Panama City, Florida, is known for some of the best beaches in the United States. Navarre Beach is loved by locals and is perfect for solitude and relaxation. Undiscovered by most tourists, you can enjoy a day at the beach without heavy crowds distracting you from your quiet beach time.

This park is a great location for a day trip and offers a number of activities to enjoy.

Additionally, one of the most-loved activities in the park is kayaking around the Grande Lagoon to see a variety of native endangered species. Fort McRee

Fort McRee can be found on a small corner of sand along with northern Florida. While this location becomes more popular every year, it’s still considered a hidden gem that many tourists are unaware of. To truly enjoy peace and solitude, consider visiting Fort McRee during the off-season in Panama City.

Fort McRee is especially loved by boaters, with a boating area along the Johnson’s Beach National Shoreline on the south side and an island on the north side. The water at Fort McRee occasionally creates a small cove, making it a great place to go swimming. There are also a variety of structures that you can explore while in Fort McRee.

Alligator Point

Alligator Point is considered part of Florida’s Forgotten Coast and consists of eight miles of gorgeous coastline that runs along a small beach peninsula. This coastal community is ideal for those looking for a serene location to enjoy a variety of activities, including sunbathing, swimming, hiking, kayaking, biking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, bird watching, and fishing.

Coconut Creek Family Fun Park

Museum Of Man In The Sea

Opt for an educational experience at the Museum of Man in the Sea. There are multiple exhibits that showcase the history of diving. Also displayed are armored suits and rigs that are useful for adventures beneath the water’s surface. Admission is under $10 for adults and children, and the museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Shipwreck Island Waterpark

Make sure you pack your sunscreen and beach towels for an all-day, water-filled excursion at Shipwreck Island Waterpark. Escort younger members of your family to the section with small slides and shallow pools. Older companions can conquer the large, fast-paced slides with exciting drops. If you’re seeking slow-paced attractions, then ease down the lazy river or brace yourself to get drenched in the wave pool. The Science And Discovery Center Of Northwest Florida

ZooWorld Zoological Park

Test your balance and flexibility as you get reacquainted with roller blades at Skaters Choice. The rink has room for every member of your family to roll across the concrete floor. If you’re new to skating, then you can take part in lessons that expose you to fundamentals and train you on skating safely. Panama City’s gorgeous beaches and various seasonal events make it a hotspot for tourists. Thousands of visitors, ranging from spring-breakers and families to retired travelers, flock to enjoy this little slice of paradise. What many people don’t realize is that Panama City is also home to a rich history. Tourists and locals alike can appreciate the various historical events that resulted in the area’s current culture. The Earliest Residents

For thousands of years, Native Americans inhabited the area that’s present-day Panama City. The ancient shell midden in Oaks by the Bay Park is evidence of the first residents who arrived during the last ice age around 13,000 years ago. This archeological site consists of mollusk shells and has preserved signs of the area’s first civilization. The shores of St. Andrews Bay contain more of these mollusk middens, which range from 2,500 to 5,000 years old and demonstrate the gradual shift from the prevalence of hunting to gathering. Additionally, these mollusks contain fossils of camels, mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and mastodons.

European Arrivals And New Tribes

In 700 A.D., Native Americans began building temples on the middens and developed a lucrative trade of shell goods. Their wares attracted sellers in places as far as New York and Minnesota, which was just one sign of the Native Americans’ complex contributions to society. By the time the Spanish arrived around 1500, the Chatot and Yucci tribes largely inhabited St. Andrews Bay in present-day Panama City. The Chatot became extinct after initial contact, and the Yucci avoided a similar fate by moving northwest.

Throughout the years, the area welcomed various settlers. Revolutionary War loyalists used the area to grow indigo and develop lucrative trades in lumbering and shipping materials. Several years later, in 1827, retired Georgia governor John Clark became one of the first permanent settlers near St. Andrews Bay by building a house with his wife. Panama City also welcomed Creeks and Cherokees who relocated to escape the Trail of Tears in the 1830s. During the Civil War, residents worked in saltworks and fisheries that the Union later destroyed.

Growing Population

Challenging living conditions and destruction from the Civil War left the Panama City area largely unsettled, but that would change as more people recognized the area’s opportunities. Companies like Ware Mercantile and Ware’s Wharf and the St. Andrews Bay Railroad, Land, and Mining Co. established themselves and made the area well-known for its salt, fishing, and shipping industries. Land plots became available for sale, and stark advertising campaigns encouraged people to move to the area and see everything it had to offer.

Official Establishment

Panama City officially became incorporated in 1909 by consolidating the smaller communities of St. Andrews, Harrison, Mortimer, and Floriopolis. Founder of the Bayline Railroad, A.B. Stelle, and city developer, George Mortimer West, chose the name in an attempt to boost real estate sales.

The name refers to the fact that the area was the U.S.’s closest mainland port to the Panama Canal. Additionally, the area sat on a direct rail line between Chicago and Panama. This historic house was one of the first of its kind in largely unsettled northern Florida and helps you learn more about the city’s first mayor and founder of the Gulf Coast Development Company that helped Panama City become a major coastal center.

In addition to naming the city, West established Panama City’s first newspaper and built the Panama City Publishing Museum in 1920. Hathway Bridge

The original Hathway Bridge replaced the St. Andrews Bay Bridge in 1959. A few decades later, the state issued funding for the construction of the present-day Hathway Bridge so that it could carry more users. In addition to facilitating fast transit between Panama City and Panama City Beach, this bridge is a marvel of modern engineering. If you walk by the Bay County Courthouse, you’ll notice the Gideon v. Wainwright case historical marker just outside. This landmark decision was essential in promoting defendant rights and ensuring a fair justice system. The marker features an accompanying 12-page booklet and a map to view other nearby historical sites. Additionally, you can appreciate the marvel that is the Bay County Courthouse, as it’s one of only five original Florida courthouses still in use.

Southernmost Union Soldier Monument

Slightly north of Panama City, Lynn Haven was established as a retirement community for Union soldiers. The town built a bronze statue of a Union soldier in 1920, and it continues to stand tall today. It’s an interesting landmark, as it’s the only structure honoring Union soldiers south of the Mason-Dixon line. Visitors appreciate this gesture, as it shows growth from Florida being part of the Confederacy during the Civil War and represents healing rifts between the two sides.

Most drivers have seen it before. You’re driving along when suddenly the “check engine oil” light comes on. If you’ve ever felt tempted to ignore the light and keep driving, you’re not alone. However, avoiding regular oil changes can have bigger (and more expensive) consequences than you might think. Read on to learn about the function of oil in an engine and discover what can happen to your vehicle if you don’t listen to its warnings.

What Happens When You Don’t Change Your Oil?

The oil in your car, truck, or SUV is essential for ensuring all the parts and pieces of your engine can function the way they’re meant to. It provides several powerful functions. Primarily, it keeps engine parts moving the way they should. It also helps keep the engine cool, and it maintains proper emissions levels.

Perhaps the most important of these duties is lubrication. Oil helps coat all the moving metal pieces within the vehicle’s engine. When the pieces touch, there’s a thin film of oil that keeps everything moving frictionlessly and helps the engine stay cool. When the engine oil runs low or gets too dirty, it can’t lubricate those pieces effectively, and they can rub together, creating excess friction and heat.

If you ignore the reminder to change your oil and your vehicle runs out, the result can be catastrophic, and it may cost you your vehicle. Excess heat and friction could cause parts within the engine to break. Usually, these breaks are very noticeable. You might hear a loud knocking, clunking, or grinding sound, followed by a car that won’t drive and an engine that won’t run. If this happens, you’re likely looking at an engine or a car replacement rather than just an oil change.

How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

How often you change your oil can depend on your vehicle and the oil you use. Newer vehicles that take synthetic oil can often go longer between changes, but the general rule for oil changes is every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Usually, when you get an oil change, the service facility you use puts a reminder sticker on your windshield. This sticker typically has both a date and a mileage number for your next change. Take your car back to your preferred shop by whichever comes sooner.

Newer cars also often have helpful reminders, and you might see a text phrase, a light that looks like an old-fashioned oil can, or a light that tells you to check your engine. While these reminders are helpful tools for remembering to take your car, truck, or SUV in, checking your oil often between oil changes is usually a good practice, too. Leaks and other adverse events can cause your car to burn through oil faster than usual. Sometimes this can happen without a driver’s knowledge, and frequent checks can offer peace of mind.

How to check your engine oil

To check your oil, make sure your vehicle is on a flat service, and the engine is cool. If you check your oil after the engine has been running for a long time or if it’s on a hill, you might not get an accurate reading. Also, engines that have been running for a long time are often hot, and you could burn yourself. Keep the vehicle off and open the hood. Have a paper towel, napkin, or rag ready, and remove the dipstick from your oil reserve. 

Wipe all the oil from the dipstick and then reinsert it into the oil container fully. Remove the dipstick carefully and hold it under a light so you can read the level. Most dipsticks have two dots or lines a few inches apart near the end of the stick. 

If the oil is between those two lines, your level is good. As it nears the bottom line, you might want to consider getting an oil change. Also, look at the color of the oil. Most good, clean oil is a light brown, like the color of honey. If your oil is dark brown or looks dirty, take your vehicle in right away.

Keeping your car, truck, or SUV in good condition can ensure a long and healthy life for your vehicle. There are many benefits to getting frequent oil changes. For one, you can expect improved gas mileage. When the parts of your engine work well and move seamlessly, your engine’s overall performance is better. If you’re visiting or new, Panama City Toyota would like to offer a list of some of our favorite spots around town to grab a sandwich.

Trigo San Francisco Style Deli

For those wanting to try a new sandwich style, we strongly recommend the Trigo San Francisco Style Deli. The deli makes its sandwiches fresh daily, and you can tell. If you’re not in a sandwich mood, this shop also has delicious pizzas, salads, and soups. We love the exposed brick, cable car designs, and San Francisco-style atmosphere. You and your taste buds will feel transported after the first bite. We recommend the Gilbert Special hot sandwich and the Chicken Mango Curry salad.

The owner, Gilbert Hamati, started this deli because he thought there weren’t enough sandwich shops in the area, but since Trigo started in 2010, we’ve hardly noticed. The expression says, “quality over quantity,” and Trigo San Francisco Style Deli certainly brings the quality. Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.; Fridays, 7 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. It’s closed Sundays, which means you have a free day to check out another restaurant on this list.

The Bagel Maker

For bread lovers, we suggest another local favorite: The Bagel Maker. Their bagels, bread, cream cheese, and delicious sweets are all made from scratch, and each day of the week boasts a unique and memorable flavor. The bakers make all their delicious sandwiches on either a bagel or the bread of your choice. You can choose from amazing options like the Colossal Corned Beef, the Tummy Tickler Turkey, or the Egg Salad Sandwich. Stop in on a Tuesday to try their Asiago specialty bagels or almost any other day of the week for an unforgettable experience.

Bring the pooch because they bake dog treats your furry friend can enjoy. Also, be sure to check out their homemade pizza dough for another take-home treat. The veteran and family-owned shop is closed Sundays, but you can find them with hot and ready offerings Monday-Friday, 5 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturdays, 6 a.m.-3 p.m. 

Cahall’s Deli

For amazing sandwiches and a welcoming atmosphere, check out Cahall’s Deli. We love this spot because it’s more than just a delicious deli. It’s also a great place to get your deli meat for the week. Cahall’s Deli doubles as a butcher shop, and its selection of meats almost rivals that of its sandwiches. We recommend Cahall’s Philly Cheesesteak, but it’s truly impossible to go wrong. With plenty of sides to choose from and a fruit cobbler for dessert, you’re likely to want to return to this spot again and again.

The Deli now has two locations for added convenience: one on 23rd street and the other in the Holley Center at Florida State University, Panama City. Breakfast sandwich lovers will love to know that it’s open for breakfast. Cahall’s is open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Bayou Joe’s Marina And Grill

Enjoy the taste of Southern comfort at Bayou Joe’s. This unpretentious spot sits on the water and offers a mouth-watering selection of fried Southern goodness. Fish sandwich lovers need look no further because Bayou Joe’s yellowfin tuna sandwich is one of the best in the state. They also have po’boys, club sandwiches, and cheesesteaks. The outdoor dining at Bayou Joe’s is truly unique, as you dine on a dock set atop the beautiful Massalina Bayou. Enjoy a meal in the sunset while watching the boats cruise in and out of the marina.

You’ll also enjoy the restaurant’s decor, with its many fun and quirky “Old Florida” touches. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays, but fans can still secure their favorite sandwiches on the other days of the week. It’s open Mondays, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Friday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

Uncle Ernie’s

For more great seafood sandwiches, check out Uncle Ernie’s, another of our nearby favorites. This bayfront bar and grill offers splendid views of the water and boasts a menu full of local flavor. Located in the historic St. Andrews community of Panama City, this spot offers drinks, live music, and some of the best crab cake sandwiches you’ll ever eat. They also offer more unique sandwiches, such as their soft shell crab sandwich and grilled fresh grouper sandwich. Uncle Ernie’s only uses fresh wild-caught fish, so you’re always eating fresh and sustainable.

History lovers will also enjoy this spot. The restaurant is actually a historic house, belonging to Jessie and Ernest (Uncle Ernie) Morris. Photographs within the restaurant preserve the historic couple’s legacy and the family-run feel continues today. You can sit on its second floor and get a perfect view of the sunset, or opt for seating in the main house, where you can enjoy the history and view from the home’s many large picture windows. The spot is open Monday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

Fatty’s Sandwich Shop

If you’re willing to take a quick drive across the bay to see Panama City Beach, be sure to check out Fatty’s Sandwich Shop while you’re there. There’s a lot to love about Fatty’s menu, but our favorite has to be the Heart Stopper. With three types of meat and two kinds of cheese, it’s hard to find a sandwich this spectacular on our side of the bay. We promise it’s worth the trip.

To make it more convenient for Panama City Beach visitors, Fatty’s offers two locations. The first is one block east of Pier Park and the other is across from the Navy Base. The sandwich shop is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. It’s closed on Sundays.
